The Embassy of Spain Hosts Flamenco Concert “Libres” by Las Migas in India
This cultural showcase also celebrates the assumption of the EU Gender Champion initiative
Libres is a concert by Latin Grammy-nominated & MIN Award-winning FLAMENCO group Las Migas
To mark the occasion of the assumption of the EU Gender Champion initiative by the Embassy of Spain in India from the Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of Spain hosted a Flamenco concert called “Libres” by an all-women group, “Las Migas”, at the Stein Auditorium, Indian Habitat Centre (IHC).
Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi accompanied the Ambassador of Spain, José María Ridao, and the Ambassador of Sweden, Klas Molin, to celebrate this event amidst a large audience of music enthusiasts.
During the hour-long concert, “Las Migas” expressed through their enthralling musical performance, the message of women empowerment and gender equality. They said “Libres, the album’s name, which means freedom, should serve as a reminder to young listeners that women are equally capable of playing instruments and leading a show. It’s a small attempt from our end to promote art and women empowerment”
Speaking on the occasion the Ambassador of Spain, José María Ridao said “The all-women’s Las Migas Flamenco group have been conquering the national and international stages for more than eighteen years, establishing themselves as a benchmark of the most feminine, brave, and joyful Flamenco performance. Having them here to perform in India has been a special experience and the perfect way to kick off our assumption of the EU Gender Champion Initiative.”
The group has been nominated for 2022´s Latin Grammy award in the category of best flamenco album, considering this is their second nomination.
The purpose of the globally established initiative “EU Gender Champions“ is to promote women’s and girls’ rights in all countries where gender issues matter, embedded in the sustainable development goal no. 5. For each period of office another ambassador of a European Union member states is designated EU Gender Champion, who then steps up his or her efforts to promote gender equality and women empowerment.
