How to Maintain Hair & Scalp Hygiene at Home

Stay home and stay safe – the world is urging everyone to follow this one simple solution to outside the global COVID-19 crisis. Awareness about personal hygiene is at an all-time high, with consistent guidelines on washing hands and disinfecting practices taking the spotlight. While staying home, we also need to turn our attention towards our own bodies needs for cleanliness and care. In the absence of salon appointments, you hair and scalp is one such important aspect of personal hygiene.

Schwarzkopf Professional expert Melissa Hughe shares tips including a step-by-step hair wash routine to help you follow an ideal hygiene routine:

Step 1 – Detangle hair and wet thoroughly

Step 2 – Take required amount of shampoo (up to 10 ml) in your palm and apply on to the scalp, section by section, with your fingers.

Step 3 – Using a circulatory motion, massage your scalp with fingers while also lathering and foaming the shampoo. If required, add a little water to increase the foam. Massage the foam onto your hair lengths and emulsify in a milking fashion.

Step 4 – Rinse thoroughly till the water comes clean without any bubbles. Recommend a second shampoo for better cleansing. Repeat steps 1 – 4.

Step 5 – Squeeze dry all the excess water from your hair. Take required amount of conditioner/ treatment (up to 20 gms) and apply with your fingers, starting at your hair tips moving up. Do not apply on the scalp. Massage into hair lengths in a milking fashion. Leave it on for 2-5 mins.

Step 6 – Apply water and emulsify your hair. Remove all the treatment with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly.

Step 7 – Towel dry scalp and hair thoroughly.

Here are a few expert tips for your hair care during the COVID-19 lockdown at home:

  • Gently rub & massage your scalp while rinsing out both the shampoo and treatment to ensure no product residue is left
  • Devote one to two minutes to massaging your scalp to remove the built-up dirt
  • Good personal hygiene also includes covering your mouth while sneezing and coughing. Ensure to wash your hands frequently to avoid transmitting germs to your scalp and hair.
  • Make sure you keep your hair tied by using accessories like hairbands/scrunchies/clips to keep your hair away from coming in contact with your face.
